Wisdom teeth out

In a ten-minute procedure this morning, I was relieved of my three wisdom teeth and about $1300. The procedure was not painful, but it was unpleasant: I was very anxious through the whole thing, and apparently was ashen by the end of it, as the doctor was concerned about me and wouldn’t let me get up until my color returned. I did this under a local anesthetic, which was supposed to last for about four hours. Right now, about three hours have passed and it’s wearing off (I’ve already taken a happy-pill, but it’s not doing much good yet). One of the extraction sites is still bleeding and that whole side of the mouth hurts, even though it’s also peculiarly numb. Also peculiar is how perfectly the numbness bifurcates my mouth. My bite feels very strange–I wonder if my teeth are re-aligning themselves or if this is an artifact of the swelling and the fact that I had gauze in my mouth for hours.

  1. Bummer.

I had three wisdom teeth out about a year and a half ago. It wasn’t any fun, but I was pretty much over it in about an hour or two.

I mentioned this on the phone to a Japanese woman at an agency I worked for, and she expressed disbelief–she had several wisdom teeth out, and felt nauseous for a week.

I hope your experience is more like mine than like hers.

  2. No nausea so far. One of the extraction sites is almost pain-free right now. The other two are still fairly painful, and that’s with the happy pills. The doctor told me to expect swelling for three days, which I assume will be accompanied by some pain.

There was about one hour of pretty severe pain before the happy pill (generic Lortab) kicked in but after the local anesthesia began wearing off. I could feel it in my sinuses up to my right eye, and could hear sounds that I speculate are the remaining teeth re-adjusting their positions in the absence of the top-right wisdom tooth pressing against them.

The bleeding is mostly under control now.

  3. Once after receiving local anaesthetic for a dental procedure I learned after it wore off that I had been chewing on my tongue for three hours. Ow.

Another time I went in for a routine filling and somebody got a little overzealous with the anaesthetic, so I ended up going to a family reunion unable to speak intelligibly and with a tendency to drool.

  4. TEN MINUTES?!? Wow! When I had my wisdom teeth pulled (about 8 years ago), the procedure, for two teeth, took an hour and a half! Under local anesthesia… Doctor literally told me to grunt and scream when it was a little too “uncomfortable…” Feel better and remember: Milkshakes are your friend.

  5. P–At that reunion, did a family member shepherd you around and say “This is Prentiss, we’re so proud of him. You made a birdhouse at the home, didn’t you Prentiss?”?

J–I chose local over general anesthesia.

  6. Wow … I must have been lucky. I had one done a couple of years ago. It was nothing. And I am the world’s biggest wussy when it comes to dental procedures. I’m sure it’s listed in the Guiness Book of World Records.

  7. About 5 years ago, I too had four wisdom teeth removed. My penchant for the grotesque demanded of the dental surgeon that my wisdom teeth be preserved. I suppose I was going to set up a shrine or something.

I have no recollection of the following, but it was conveyed to me by my girlfriend at the time and confirmed by the nurse at the dental surgeon’s when I went back for a check-up appointment. Apparently when I came out of the anesthesia, I was extremely confused. The nurse told me that they had forgotten to keep my wisdom teeth, and that they had instead thrown them into a wastebasket with a bunch of other teeth. I asked if I could retrieve them, and she said there were too many teeth in the basket, that I’d never be able to find them, and that I’m not allowed to look in there anyway.

I’m told my response was, “I know which ones are mine. And if I can’t find them I’ll try them all until I find the ones that fit!”

Good thing wisdom teeth only come in once.

  8. heh, found ya on Google looking for other ppl who had general anesthesia when getting wisdom teeth out. Wanted to know how it worked.

I’m glad your surgery wasn’t all that bad. Mine was nothing, really. The chewing on gauze for 3 hours was annoying as hell though. Now I’ve got a few days to see whether or not I’ll get dry sockets; i’m hoping for no.

  9. I had my wisdom teeth removed yesturday around 3pm. I had pain for a total of one hour and the pain killer medication never kicked in. When the Doc called to check up on me he told my mother to give me advil and sure enough, pain went bye-bye!!! They drugged me up so much that the pain killer wasn’t going to work. And I never passed out during surgery…they kept drugging and drugging me and nothing. It’s about 24 hours now since surgery and I am in no pain, bleeding has finally stopped and my bottom left lip and chin area is still numb. I’m a little worried about that but we just called the doctor and he said this is normal. Overall the experience was not as bad as I thought it would be. For me, the first few days of braces was far more worse than this.

  10. I’m getting all 4 wisdom teeth out tomorrow, and I’m very nervous. It seems like for some people it’s no big deal, and for others it’s a week of hell. I really hope I recover quickly.

  11. i just got my wisdom teeth out the day before yesturday. i’m only fourteen, they said that it was really young to get them out, and they thought that i might only go through with getting one out. but i got all four. it took about an hour to get them all out, it didnt hurt to bad after ward just guaze was annoying, man my face is like a ballooon tho…

  12. Well I just got my wisdom teeth out 4 days ago. I really thought I was going to die and told the oral surgeon that I signed my life away and that he could kill me, but I am currently alive and all has been progressing well. I was initially only going to have 1 tooth taken off but them wham all 4. It wasn’t bad at all. The novacaine and laughing gas helped a lot. I barely felt any pain afterwards only one burst of pain where I yelled at my mom and started crying because she was the one who wanted all 4 of them out. Definately bring ice with you and immediately put it on to prevent swelling. It makes the experience more liveable. Also eat or else you’ll experience severe nausea. With that said you’ll be fine and dandy 🙂

  13. WEll i just got my wisdom taken out Sept 6, 2004. The thought of keeping all four of my wisdom grossed me out I looked at them . The whole operation was painful. Like i had local anthesia man 10 shots. The last hurt always make a fist when they doing somthing painful helps dim the pain. I was planning to have two out but instead 4 i felt like the procedure would never end. The first tooth was the hardest one. Pull pUll Stop Realli PUll PUll Stop think PUlll PULL PULL! Pop whoa! Then Pull Pull then its like someone is chizelling my bone kind of pain. Make fist then i think of the girl i love!. She is talking to me pain is dimmed. Keep telling myself its going to end soon. It does even the doctor was seeing what he was doing and kept asking if it hurts real bad tell me. I could even make a noise cuz of the gauze and the pulling. Hey one part is the gauze in your mouth to prevent any pieces to fall down your throat. THat scared me. Right now i feel a small amount of pain remember to keep occupied, Takes away the thoughts ofpain.

  14. I just got my two of my wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday, I guess it wasn’t too bad. The worst part of it was the anaesthetic needles, they hurt pretty bad, I thought it would be jsut one, but no, the needles just kept coming, I got about 4-5. Also, the sound effects were pretty bad, I could hear my gums being cut into and the teeth being yanked out, they should really provide ear plugs or something.

  15. I just had my wisdom teeth out yesterday at age 26. The operation was a piece of cake. I didn’t go under, just had novicaine that lasted for 8 hours after surgery. I have a low threshold for pain. I had two bottom teeth removed that were impacted. Each tooth took 5 minutes to remove. On the second day, I am experiecing practically no pain at all, just using ibuprofen. I haven’t had to use the fancy drugs they gave me. So far it’s been a breeze. Much easier then I thought it would be.

  16. I was convinced getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed at once wouldn’t be nearly as difficult as giving birth to a child. And, well, for the most part it wasn’t. It’s been about 4 hours since the procedure and I’m still pretty numb. Other than unsightly drool, I haven’t had any negative after affects. I was given local anesthesia (around 8 shots) which was the most painful part of the procedure. I was a 25 year old woman in a dentist’s chair fighting back tears. Yes, the sounds of the instruments pulling at the teeth are quite grueling. Keep your eyes closed, your hands clamped, and remain positive if you’re planning on getting yours removed and everything will be fine. I’m alittle worried about tomorrow and how I’ll feel then. I won’t be taking the Demerol I was prescribed since I’m currently breastfeeding. Hopefully IB Motrin will suffice. Excruciating pain or not, either way, I’m sure I’ll have no regrets for getting all 4 removed.

  17. I just had the top two out today. I got a needle upper right, a needle upper left and 2 needles in the roof of my mouth which made me think I was swallowing my tounge everytime I swallowed. The first tooth took about 5 seconds, no joke. The surgeon basically fiddled with it for about 5 seconds and said “Well that’s done, let’s move on to the next one.” The other tooth wasn’t so easy though and took about 5 minutes to DIG it out and it hurts like hell now. He gave me a stitch and a prescription for tylenol 3. the first one doesn’t hurt in the least right now but I can feel the second one throbbing like crazy and it’s been 3 hours since they left my gums. I know it’s gonna hurt like crazy tonight and tomorrow but I heal fast and I’m gonna keep saying that to myself. It helps if you don’t smoke!

  18. I had my wisdom teeth out twenty-one years ago. I remember shiny metal tools and a dentist with a silky touch with the novocaine needle. Never felt a thing. Until about 4 hours later.

I kept my wisdom teeth after they were removed. Apparently, they don’t let you anymore. I keep them in a medicine cabinet. It is a fairly substantial collection of ivory that sits in a 35mm film canister, waiting for me to make jewelry from it.

Adam once confided to me that keeping his wisdom teeth were necessary to keep the various aspects of his intelligence in concert.

Now, he’s just dumb like us.

    I still have my teeth.

  19. Had all 4 wisdom teeth removed yesterday, went under general anesthesia, was told it took about 90 minutes to remove all 4.

Top two were already cracked and the bottom 2 had to be dug out. I remember very little (I woke up a few times when the dentist was using a hammer and chisel to break the teeth for extraction), but passed out quickly. Oddest part was being strapped into the chair and tilted back, head down at a 45 degree angle.

Woke up extremely confused and remember only a few flashes of the 45 minute drive home (no, I didn’t do the driving).

Have a mouth full of stitches, couldn’t talk at all the first day (yesterday) but talk fine now and have had no real pain – minor ‘discomfort’ at best.

Was quite nervous before the surgery, to be honest, for no reason.

For others about to undergo the surgery, I would recommend general anesthesia. You’ll only get one shot that you’ll remember (the I.V.) and you’ll be unconscious during the gruesome parts when they may have to break your teeth to get them out.

If you haven’t gone through it yet, it’s really not that bad (IF YOU’RE ASLEEP!)

  20. just got one out (top right) about 2 hours ago.. the whole procedure took about 20 seconds! most of the time at the office was just waiting for the lidocaine to kick in..

i had the two bottom ones taken out two years ago- which was a much more painful ordeal. lots of tooth splintering and blood spattering.. those were already impacted.

the top one had just poked through and wasn’t impacted yet- a quick yank it and it was out! i’m currently sucking on some gauze, but my advice is to get out your wisdom teeth earlier rather than later, if there’s a chance that they’ll get impacted!

  21. Hey Everyone, this site is cool… I’m getting my wisdom teeth out in 2 days and to be honest I’m a little nervous. My best friend had hers out 2 months ago and it was 2 weeks of hell for her. They put her under, and I’m just getting mine done with local. I’m not as much of a baby when it comes to pain as her, so hopefully it will be a piece of cake. Wish me luck!

  22. I had all 4 wisdom teeth out on the 11th of feb this year and am still not back at work! They were removed under a general anasthetic and everything appeared to be fine, except 2 days after the surgery I awoke in absolute agony and one side had swelled to twice the size it was originally. I had somehow contracted an infection and have never experienced pain like it, and I’ve had a broken leg and ankle! I am still unable to eat solid food over a week later tho the pain is subsiding a bit now!

I honestly hope no-one else has the same traumatic experience as me!

  23. Im getting mine taken out on February the 19th. Im only thirteen. Nervous. Frightened. 🙁 Wish me luck.

  24. Shit… I’m having mine taken out tommorrow and I’m 14, this is gonna suck, huh?

Cause they haven’t fully came in yet but my doctor wants them out cause they are causing headaches.

    THIS SUCKS!

  25. im getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow and i have 6 of them!!! dont ask how.. i guess im just lucky!..well im real nervious because i have never been put out before luckily i am getting gased then being put out.. well wish me luck

  26. Damn it reading all this made me more nervous than before lol… I hate all surgory!!! Im going under general, and this is happening tommorow! But i’ve heard heaps of bad storys that is making it all worse… I guess i get freaked out easy when it comes to hospital shit.

  27. Well, I got mine out on March 21st, only the bottom 2. I had never even had a cavity before, so the numbing my mouth was crazy. I was so afraid, but it turns out that I was laughing the whole time. The only gross part is when you can hear your teeth cracking as they yank them out, but no worries! Its kinda fun. The procedure only took about 20 minutes, and I went right home and ate a chocolate milkshake an hour later! They gave me Vikoden for pain, which really didnt work, even when i took 2, plus about 5 ibeuprofin, but my wounds didnt hurt too much!

My teeth moved back where they were supposed to be within 3 hours, so my stiches were then on my cheeks, which was kind of strange.

Today I went to the dentist because my left side swelled up… which is strange because my face didnt swell at all after the procedure. It turns out I had a dry socket, and they packed the socket with some really soothing stuff, and I am pain free! Unfortunately I have solo and ensamble tomorrow, I have 3 saxophone events and 2 vocal events. Luckily I cannot feel my sockets! Good Luck everyone who is getting theirs out!

  28. For everyone who has impacted wisdom teeth:

Definately get General Anesthesia! It is expensive, but it’s the best $250 you will ever spend! I don’t think I could endure the trauma of watching the oral surgeon cut my gums open, crack the teeth into pieces, extract the pieces one by one, and then sew the wounds shut.

  29. Hi all,

Like others here, I found this site while Googling for information on getting your wisdom teeth taken out.

This monday I will be going to an orientation/meeting with the orthosurgeon to discuss payment, procedure, etc.

I like to check the Internet for some background information first.. I’m extremely nervous!

I’m going to be getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out, and I’m not one who can take pain easily. I’ve never had a cavity or anything, so I don’t know what it’s like to be put under, or even have novocaine. The thought of getting a needle put into my gums isn’t exactly pleasant to me.

I did have braces when I was younger, and that hurt a lot for about 2 weeks after…

I’d like to get the General Anesthicietaetinic, but don’t know if I can afford it (I have no cash).

    Quite worried about all this.

  30. I am 18 years old and I am having my wisdom teeth out in the next two weeks. I am so scared.

  31. Hi,

I’m 25 and had 2 of my wisdom teeth extracted day before yesterday. I chose to have IV sedation, which I think was a wonderful choice to make. I had never been put to sleep before so that was the part that worried me the most. They gave me laughing gas first to calm me down and then put the IV in my hand (couldn’t feel it…tingly from the gas). They put 2 shots of stuff in the IV and then told me that they were about to give me the good stuff and I wouldn’t remember anything else. Well, they were right. I saw the shot of yellow stuff heading for my IV tube and the next thing I knew, I was walking up the steps at my house. I don’t remember leaving the office, getting in the car, or the ride home. Its actually quite funny.

The pain hasn’t been bad at all for me. More than anything, my jaw is sore. The top tooth they just pulled and the bottom one was impacted so I have stitches. I only had to keep the gauze in my mouth for about 2 hours. I’ve had a little bit of swelling, but I think its mostly from the novicaine shots. I have Lortab for pain, but have only taken 2 of them.

It really hasn’t been as bad as I thought it was going to be. Honestly, I had a tooth filled without novicaine and that hurt much worse! Just hope I don’t get dry sockets!

  32. Wow..im getting my wisdom teeth out this Friday. Boy am I scared. Im going under general anesthesia, so ill be tottally asleep. im getting all 4 out, and they are all still under the gumm..yipee. Hope when i wake up it doesnt hurt too bad!

  33. I had my wisdom teeth removed and let me tell you, be afraid…be very very afraid. I went under General Anesthesia and I kept waking up in the middle of the surgery, with no pain killers or anything…I was screaming as he pulled out the teeth in front of the Wisdom Teeth by accident. He said “Oh Fuck” and jammed another IV in the other arm until I went under again. When I woke up I was missing 8 teeth and I had a hole through the left cheek where the drill slipped off and went through my cheek. He kept saying “Oh God Im sorry”, but I was totally out of it and when he told me to wait in the lobby for my ride, I slipped and broke three ribs. I started puking cause of the pain and boy did the puke burn the empty sockets in the gums. It was a real scary experiance but I plan of just putting ice on them and praying this is all just a bad dream. Good luck with yours!

  34. Hi everyone!

I found this from surfing the net. I just came back from a consultation appointment with a dentist about getting my wisdom teeth pulled. It’s going to cost about $1,130 after insurance. (This is for 4 teeth and general anesthesia) Just curious if this is in the normal price range? Seems really expensive… (especially for a college student like myself)

    Thanks!

    ~ Katie

  35. well that might sound high but how much dose your insurance cover mine cover 80% for that kind of work it just all depends on your insurance and how much it will cover. and just a side note i have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth out in january i am 15 just want to wait till my insurance renews so i can get it done with out much cost to me other wise i would get them out this summer

  36. Thanks for your reply!

Mine covers only 60% of currently available insurance… so it only covers about $500 (the total fees amount to about $1600)

I just wanted to make sure that it’s not a scam or anything, if you know what I mean… = )

    Thanks again!

    ~ Katie

  37. im getting my wisdom teeth out (all 4) in about 2 weeks, so i thought id look around on the internet and scare myself to death. im even more terrified now than i was, but somehow i feel better… im getting iv anethesia which im happy about, i have a very high pain tolerance…but i still forsee myself crying for at least a few hours afterwards…more from being scared and it being over than anything… i had to sign all these papers saying i understood that i could die….and its gonna cost about 1450 before insurance which is 80% covered…but for some reason i still have to pay 50% of the cost the day of the surgery…luckily- im 19 and my mom is going to pay it 🙂 shes not too happy about it though, trying to make me get like no anesthesia and take tylenol instead of filling the expensive vicodin prescription….ive never had surgery before- thats what scares me the most but my doctor said she hasnt had any of the problems with wisdom teeth in her patients, and she came highly recommended by friends of my family…im also worried cuz i smoke, and im supposed to just stop smoking for two weeks after the surgery….when i just KNOW that im going to want to smoke even more than usual because of the pain and stress of it all…plus i can only take off one day of work, and i work with people all day, im going to be drooling in their faces…

whatever- at least it will eventually be over.

hoping the one tooth doesnt paralyze my lip…and that my cheekbones will look better and thinner once the swelling goes down…muhahaha

  38. Its so nice having Google :

Lets see I’m 22 and I’m having 3 wisdom teeth (thats all i have ) pulled in a few hours….I have no insurance and its only costing me $715, plus the $100 office visit for the x-rays. I’ve never had any cavities or anything so I wanted to do some research about getting put under with the general an…… yeah however u spell it. This site has helped answer alot of my questions, late.

  39. hey,

im getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow and im freaked out!!! im just worried about swelling and getting sick rite after…does neone have ne tips on speeding up the recovery process? im scared now!!! help!

  40. haha i’m 18 and i went to the dentist just last week. He said that i’ll never have wisdom teeth! woohooo … suckers…

  41. hey!

im done, and it went great! im sooo glad. its not nearly as bad as i thought….to tell you the truth i was laughing as he gave me the iv general anstethia and laughed when i woke up seemingly 5 seconds later. the weird part was i could hear the people talkin while they worked and i woke up once…i didn’t feel ne thing tho. it was kinda kewl. the only problem now is my bottom lip is completley numb…for those of you getting your teeth out…its not bad at all!!!!! just take a deep breath and you will get through it,,,trust me…luv ya guyz!!

  42. I am 32 yrs old and I just got my wisdom teeth out on Aug 3rd. I highly recomend going under. I didnt remember anything and I felt no pain. I felt a little loopy when I woke though. My Dad drove me home where the rest of the day I popped Vicotin and changed many gauzes in my mouth. It is Aug 5th now and I dont really have any swelling. All my friends say I am lucky that I didnt have alot of pain, I guess it matters what kind of experienced doctor you get. Though my diet consists of pudding and tomato soup, I cant wait to sink my teeth into a thick burger in about a week 🙂

  43. I’m 25 and had all 4 (impacted) wisdom teeth removed 4 days ago. I can relate to being scared… I started crying as soon as I got in the dentist’s chair! All the worrying is worse than the actual experience. So if you’re full of worry right now, just keep in mind that it’s all downhill from here. You’ll be fine. 🙂 And if you get sick of milkshakes and pudding, baby food makes you think you’re eating actual REAL food. kinda.

  44. Katrina Welches

HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I’m supposed to be getting my wisdom teeth taken out later on today. (all 4) What if they dont put me to sleep? Will i survive? Im not good with pain either! OH BOY!! Can someone reassure me that everything is gonna be okay?

  45. Hi! I got my wisdom teeth out yesterday morning at 11AM. It’s now 12:15 the next day and i’m feeling a lot better. I had an I.V. and was completely knocked out. This was my 2nd oral surgery. I had the 1st one because I had an extra tooth growing under my gum on the bottom left side. This time, they found out I had 5 wisdom teeth and if I let them go on, they could very well mess up the alignment of my teeth. I took one pain killer last night and it made me sick. So now, i’m only going to take the antibiotics instead! I just hope the swelling goes down soon! I feel like a chipmunk!! But to anyone getting their wisdom teeth out- you’ll be happy its over with and i’d recommend getting completely knocked out with an I.V.!!

  46. Today this morning I had 16 and 17 wisdom teeth extracted and was not bad at all. They used Nitrous Oxide and a I.V and for some reason after they put the needle in a few mins later i have no memory of any of it. I woke up with I.V allready out and nitrous off and didn’t believe it was done. now about 7 hours later I have no swelling, I started to feel slight pain afterwards 2 hours later. Taken 2 Hydrocodone generic for vicodin and that put me out. I also recommend getting put to sleep with an I.V.

  47. Hello, my name is Dena. I am 17… I was SOOOOO afraid to get mine taken out. I just had them taken out this morning and it was not bad at all. and I mean I was SCARED. I was at the point of tears two different occasions thinking about it but it was fine for me. It seems to be pretty different for everyone. I woke up from the anesthesia and I was fine I just remeber wanting to go hom and my mouth being full of gauze. The gauze and the pain are the WORST part. If you are put under the surgery should be fine. I was also fine walking out the the office on my own. So yeah, I got it done today and I am already starting to feel a lot better. They gave me perkiset. My only fear now is a dry socket because I hear those HURT.

  48. Well, I was awake with my wisdom teeth removal. I was so scared. I recieved 13 needles in my gums, which actually did not hurt too bad. During the surgery they told me that they found a 5 th tooth. I was on ‘happy gas’ so I was quite entertained with the whole procedure and was amazed at the fact afterwards how I couldn’t feel my bottom lip, and made people play with it. So I had 5 wisdom teeth removed. 5! After I had minimum pain, however my petite face looked like eddie murphy from the klumps. And then a few months later, i felt ANOTHER tooth, and I got my 6th wisdom tooth removed, which took like 1 minute. and now half a year later. Guess what… I feel number 7 I hoping to get into guiness or something…

  49. I’m 19 and I’m getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow at 12 am. I am so nervous. I’m getting some sort of pill a couple hours before to calm me down. Then they are going to put me on local and a I.V. I really wanted general and I’m pissed about this. I heard they open your mouth REALLY wide (which is what my dentist told me). Does it feel like your jaw is going to come off? What I’m most scared of is seeing my jaw being opened that wide and them cutting in to my gums and… *shudder*

  50. Hi All,

I just wanted to thank you all for your messages. I read this whole thread before going in on Friday for my wisdom tooth extraction. Like everyone else, I totally recommend the IV sedation. The worst part of my office experience was that it took the doctor half an hour to find my vein!!! LOL. He was very nice about it and I DO have deep veins!

I’ve never had IV sedation before, so I had some weird “flashbacks” that night – seeing things that weren’t there, but nothing major. You’ll be tired and groggy, so just zone out and don’t worry about anything.

I’m feeling a lot better now (it’s Sunday night), so REST REST REST and take Vitamin C (1500mg per day) a few days before and a week after to help prevent dry socket. Also, take a daily multivitamin to boost your immune system.

Surprisingly, after 3 days straight, I’m still not sick of TV. ;-P

Best wishes to all who are still getting theirs done! Take care and stay calm! 🙂

  51. I got my wisdom teeth out a week ago today and they hurt so bad…im not taking my percocets anymore just a lot of ibprofin and my mouth tastes gross i cannot wait until this is all over the surgery wasnt bad at all it just sucks afterwards

  52. I wrote last week saying I was getting my wisdom teeth out. These past 6 days have been terrible. Thursday was hell. The actual operation was ‘nothing’ to me because I didn’t even know it happened. I got a pill an hour before then went into the surgery room. This old english man who kept on making jokes about George Bush put an IV in my arm (which didn’t hurt because he distracted me) and put a shot of something into that. Probably valuim. Well a couple minutes later he asked if I felt different and I said no so he gave me another shot. Then the surgeon came in and I said hi, then I turned to talk to the nurse. Without ANY time lost (I don’t even remember feeling dizzy or anything) I was sitting up in the recovery room, STILL talking to the nurse. Though since I was so drugged I didn’t realize where I was. I didn’t know why but my mouth, jaw and cheeks felt really funny and I couldn’t talk properly. I was gettting really pissed off because of that. The nurse was like “You shouldn’t be talking” Then my mom came in and started talking to her. Then she said to me “We have to go” and I was like “What are you talking about! They haven’t even done anything yet!” and she was like “Yes. They are done and it’s almost two.” I guess since I had had two shots with the IV I was out for a long time. Most people wake up right after the surgery but I was out for an extra hour. I found out later from my mom that she fainted after the nurse took me to the car. I apparently was all swollen and had blood all over my face. You’d think they’d clean that up wouldn’t you? Well half way home (we had to drive an hour for my surgery) the drugs were wearing off and I started feeling the worst pain I had ever felt in my life. I would have screamed if I could have moved my mouth, but I couldn’t. So I just cried. When we got home my mom tried to get me to eat some yogart but I could barely open my mouth 1 cm so it was impossible to get the spoon in my mouth. I managed to eat a few spoonfuls then she gave me a tyonal 3. After that I started throwing up like crazy. You know in the Exorsist when the girl throws up all over the priest? I threw up like 10 tens more than she did. And throwing up when you are that swollen hurts like hell. I couldn’t eat anything (not even drink water) without throwing up. So basically I spent the first day without any pain killers. However, not everyone should worry about going through what I did. Because according to the nurse (who phoned to check up on me the next day) you are not supposed to throw up at all.I have an extremely sensitive stomach and might possibly be anemic so that was probably why I got sick like that. Friday was much better because I didn’t throw up so I was able to keep the tyonal 3 down. I came very close to throwing up that night but luckily I didn’t. I was also able to open my mouth wide enough to eat some eggs and yogart. Saturday I woke up with a terrible pain in my cheeks and mollars. It felt like someone had cut open my cheeks with a razor. Well they did… But ya. I thought maybe the stitching had come undone but that was all fine. These past two days have been ok, except the bruising is coming through now and half my face and neck is really yellow. My jaw is still sore like crazy (and actually seems to be getting worse each day) and my face is still really swollen. The swelling probably won’t be fully down for a month. Or at least another week. My jaw is normally 4 inches wide though right now it’s 6 and a half. On Thursday my jaw had swelled up to 8 inches (and my cheeks about 7 inches). I was so swollen that my jaw-line actually went flat. My face looked like it belonged to a 300 lb person with a square face. No offense to 300 lb people with square faces, but if you are thin and used to a round/oval face then this is very scary. I look like the Michelin tire guy, except my forehead is still normal. This really sucks. And I think I have nerve damage in my tongue.

  53. I am getting my 2 wisdom teeth removed today in 1 hour I am freaking scared I am getting a local but my concern is that it hurts right now they are decayed and am i gonna feel anything when they do it I am not even scared about the shots its the pulling part i am nervous about .. Damn I hate teeth!!

  54. Ok im super bummed out, Im getting my wisdom teeth taken out in 11 hours. This sucks so much ass, Ive never been more bummed out about a surgery in my whole life.

All four under the gums, my face is gonna be swollen to all hell, and its gonna hurt like a mother.I already have a phobia of dentists, after this im never going back again.

Ill let you all know how it went tommorow.

  55. OK i wrote yesterday that I was getting my wisdom teeth out well I did it just a local .. I was scared to death and thats how I found this site I just wanted to write this incase anyone out there is wondering what it will be like.. My 2 top teeth were not impacted. I already had my bottoms out years ago those were impacted.. I got a local yesterday and I was nervouse as hell everything went fine got the shots then came the pallet shot I warn you now if you hate gagging watch out its a beeotch.. these 2 shots are givin in the pallet of your mouth and make you gag so much i threw up 2 times and dry heaved about 5 minutes.. I couldnt even drive home because I was still gagging for hours after until it wore off. but beseide that shot everything was great did not feel a thing with the shots.. 1st one came out in seconds. the second one was not so lucky it was decayed so it kept breaking took about 10-15 minutes they had to break the bone around it a little.. NO PAIN.. all day and all night no PAIN took aleeve instead of the vicatin this morning i am more soar but took the aleeve again . the swelling was no so bad went down quick and i still have a little puffiness but not much. So anyone getting a local dont worry about it but watch out for the pallet shot its horrible not the shot itself the numbness in the throat (way back) just makes you gag alot.. have fun!! I’m Done

  56. Well I’m having my wisdom teeth out in…. 8 hours! Joy of joys. Just 2, the bottom 2, about 3rd the size of a normal tooth and hardly any root, apparently its going to be like “shelling peas” can’t be too bad right? Well I’m still incredibly nervous! Having a local which I think i’d prefer to being under, cause that idea creeps me out! But still soooo nervous! everyone else I know went under! Oh well. I’m only 16 so hopefully not gna be too bad :S maybe I’ll just run away now! And I’m definitely gna be keeping my eyes closed while it all happens!

  57. i am going to be getting mine cut out tomorrow and i am SO FREAKING SCARED.! I am scared of needles, scared of doctors, scared of just about anything involved. I hope that i don’t punch the dentist. Sometimes when i get scared i do some pretty bad stuff. I am not going to be able to sleep tonight because of all the anxiety. I am also worried about the gaws cause yea that is going to be one of the worste parts i think. oh well i just hope that i can be completly knocked out

Not dazed or whatever, just FLAT OFF OUT OF IT!

  58. I had my 4 wisdom teeth extracted 4 days ago and, for me, the procedure really wasn’t that bad. They started me off on the nitrous oxide, that in itself makes me look forward to getting a filling, so already I was happy as a clam. Then they put the IV in and he pumped about 3 shots into it and kept asking me if I was feeling anything different but I wasn’t. Needless to say, I was wide awake the entire time. It had some effect on me because I remember continuously making small talk about the progress throughout the procedure. The top 2 came out surprisingly fast whereas the lower 2 needed a little bit more “attention”. After the first one was removed and they stitched it up, I remember asking if these were dissolving stitches. After that, he gave me a “block” to bite on. Guess I was asking too many questions. Anyways, the last one was the hardest to get out. I must not have been completely numbed up either because I remember clinching my fist as hard as I could and twisting my legs in the chair as I grunted LOUDLY. He then had the nerve to ask me, “Are you sure it’s not just pain from the pressure?” To which I said, “I’m positive. It fuckin HURTS!!”, which got a chuckle out of the nurses. He shot me up once more and must have hit the sweet spot this time because I felt no pain after that. He had to remove the last tooth in pieces and I kept asking if he was done each time he removed a piece. They all laughed at me again because I let out a “Yay” when we were done. The first day was cake because I couldn’t even stay awake for more than an hour. Make sure you schedule some “veg” days too! I’ve been so tired the past few days but it’s starting to get better. Now, the insides of my cheeks are swollen and, as others have mentioned, I’ve got some stank Dragon breath. They gave me Penicillin, Ibuprofin, and Vicodin. It’s weird, one day the right side of my jaw was sore, today it’s the left. It’s a real DEEP pain, kinda shoots right down to the bone. The Ibuprofin seems to help me best for the pain. I take one Penicillin every 6 hours and one of the painkillers. The worst of the bleeding stopped the first night but I still notice a little when I rinse and spit the goods from waaay in the back. Looks like I’ll still be on “soft” foods for a little while still. I’m on day 4 of recovery, seems kinda odd that the pains I do experience seem to be more intense. Hope I’m not getting dry socket!

  59. Hello everyone,

I researched a little to find out how it may be for me when I get my 4 wisdom teeth extracted. This forum helped me somewhat. I had them removed yesterday. I did get put to sleep. I woke up and it was all over. I didnt feel groggy. I am thakful to say I am not in any major pain now. I didnt bleed long either. One thing I didnt see from anyone here is after the gauzes if you still are bleeding you can use damp tea bags. My instructions had this and boy did it work! If you are having it done, dont worry! I was so nervous and it was fine, dont worry yourself!

  60. I just found out I am having my wisdom teeth taken out soon, and i am scared to death. I have had 9 teeth taken out before and it was miserable. I am getting put under, though. What decides when you get your widsom teeth- I am only 15 and thought it was kind of young. This site really helped me out though…thanks

  61. Never Again

I had all four wisdom teeth pulled out a week ago. they didn’t put me to sleep which really sucked, i heard everything. If your getting them out go to sleep drugs are your friend. after it was done i was in so much pain for four days and the pain killers really didn’t help. dont be shocked if you cant open your mouth, its the worst thing you will ever go through thank god im done. be afraid be very afraid

  62. Had mine out Tues am and now it’s Friday… I’m 29 and told that it takes hella long for people “my age”.

DEFINITELY get the laughing gas. Poor dentist was trying to be all equal rights and stuff but I told him “I’m a big wuss, give me the best stuff you got” and he gassed me up good. It’s a good feeling– you can hear and respond as needed, but you don’t remember jack. I think I remember hearing a crunch or crack at one point, but then it was la la la and I spaced out again.

Surgery day: face totally numb, dropped glass of water all down my front while trying to rinse down some advil. Slept all afternoon, except for the one time I woke up because I was drooling and screamed like a white woman because there was blood in my drool. Apparently normal. Somebody told me to drink sprite bc the bubbles will help keep the site clean. nope. Wrong answer. Praying daily that I didn’t F myself and cause a dry socket. Can’t brush teeth tonight because the rinsing and spitting is bad. How gross.

Second day: was ok. did some laundry, basic activity stuff.. not working out or anything heavy though. ate soup, pudding, mashed potatoes, oatmeal… tried to have refried beans but the little bean chunks were more hassle than it’s worth. Was like a miracle to be able to *gently* brush my teeth and get rid of the fur and stank breath in there. no bleeding. Rinsing with salt water, which tastes bad but really feels good.

third day: stupid me tried talking too much yest., so jaw hurts. Woken up this am by pain in one side of my jawbone. dull pain, but enough to wake me up. this sucks. of the 4 teeth, 3 came out no problem, third one has stitches and that one is killing me. the other side of my mouth is totally fine. Well until I try to chew. My husband is eating real food and I’m completely jealous. But he did offer to put the whole plate of food in the blender and let me drink it like a shake. Not appealing, but thanks. Everybody keeps saying, oh it will be better tomorrow…

Friday (fourth day): so far this still sucks. Woke up again with sore jaw because everybody is calling to see how I’m doing. Can’t be rude and just skip the calls. Though I should. Something good that helps is a hot washcloth held up against the sore part, then open-close mouth a little bit to relieve stiffness.

Is it possible that I could say I’m sick of eating ice cream? Seriously. Ate hummus off a spoon yesterday, just for some variety. I guess it’s going to take longer than I thought, just have to resign myself to it. Pisser is having company for dinner tomorrow night and I can’t eat anything I’m cooking. Don’t think a dinner party of oatmeal and soup would go over, do you?

I think I’m in the clear over dry sockets, but not 100% sure yet. Still taking 2 advil every 4 hours. Best thing to do is not talk too much, it only aggravates my jaw and makes it sore. This is much worse than braces– did that for 2 years. thank god I took this week off work. Don’t know what I’d do if I had to talk and carry on normally. Probably will cancel some of weekend activities, just to rest up and heal sooner. 🙁

Advice: get the gas. Seriously, don’t try to do it on just novocaine. Also, get this earlier than later in life. Get it when you’re a kid, still on your parents insurance, or in school so you can just veg and prey off your friends and family. Being older, working, married, etc– this just sucks and is a HUGE inconvenience. Yes, it will be over in a few more days… but if I knew then what I know now, I’d have done it at 18 or 19.

Good luck everyone, and enjoy a round of pudding on me 😉

  63. I was 16 when I had my wisdom teeth removed, my biggest mistake was taking the anabolic stereoids they prescribed. These steroids caused me to be sick and not eat for 4 days, Maalox and Pepcid AC for about 2 weeks cleared it up, then another recurrance recently, the doctors still “dont know whats wrong” even though it happend after my wisdom teeth were taken out, I just wish I wouldn’t have gone through with it.

  64. I get my wisdom teeth taken out in about 8 hours from now. I’m 17, getting all four out, but none are impacted yet. I am gettings nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a precursor to the IV. (I am the worlds biggest wimp when it comes to dental work AND needles). I know lots of people that have had it done when knocked out, and they say its not that bad…I hope they’re right…I’ve been freaking out about this surgery for weeks now….The only other “semi-major” stuff I’ve had done is a root canal, but that was when I was awake…I got lots of movies and soft foods and stuff in preparation. Can’t wait for that vicodin prescription 😀 …Oh well…wish me luck, I might post a followup soon..

  65. So, Its 11:40pm or so right now…I went in for surgery at 9:15am and changed into gown and cap…I was nervous as hell. Then at about 10:10 (finally!) I went in, got nitrous…Here’s the trick: when they ask you if you feel any different, say no. Keep eye contact and maintain coherent conversation with them, and they will crank up the strength of the nitrous…Then they gave me the IV (I HATE NEEDLES) and I didn’t even care…I knew they were doing it, and I could feel it, but it didn’t feel like pain, it didn’t hurt at all…then within 30 secs, the doctor said “now we are going to make you go to sleep….really soon you are going to feel very tired.”

I don’t even remember fading out gradually, I was just out like a light. Next thing I knew, I was awake in the recovery room, laying down in a bed. I saw the clock and it was about 12:00…the first thing I said to the nurse sitting there was “didn’t that take a little longer than expected?” she smiled and said I had taken a little longer than normal to wake up but that it went fine and I would be ok. The nurse tried to change the gauze in my mouth, but for some reason, my sockets weren’t bleeding very much at all, and she said it was good because it meant they already started to scab (but I think this is because it was almost 2 hours after surgery). Then my mom came in and took me home, where I laid down the rest of the day (taking the occasional Vicodin), sipping gatorade and eating pudding, and dozing in and out of sleep. I was in some very minor pain, kinda sore like after you work out really hard, but in my face/jaw. I iced my face with towel covered ice bags (to keep my face dry) for 20 minutes, followed by a rest of 20minutes, then repeated that process for about 8 hours. The ice really helps to numb the soreness, as well as reduce swelling (I have almost none), so I recommend ice packs.

Overall, I didn’t wake up during surgery, the nitrous is a must, and I don’t even remember the noises/talking going on in the surgery like some people do. This was possible the most enjoyable dentist/doctor experience I’ve ever had. Keep in mind I was so worried about it beforehand that I was constantly nauseous, but seriously, take it from the biggest wimp ever: the anxiety before the operation was SO MUCH worse than the whole thing.

Don’t worry about it too much…I also recommend taking vitamins for several days before surgery, and continue until the sockets are totally healed…Since this is only my first day after the surgery, I will probably post another update in a day or two…Good luck to everyone that gets this done!

  66. My fateful day came Friday, November 26th at 8 AM. After putting this off for years I finally could put it off no longer, as my regular dentist said I was starting to get bone loss around my wisdom teeth. The top 2 were coming in straight but the bottom 2 were both impacted. I’m a 41 year old male, so was worried about post-op healing and complications as my bones ain’t young like they used to be.

Soon after arriving they brought me into the treatment room and weighed me. They had me take off my shirt (good thing I was wearing a t-shirt beneath – it was cold in there) and lie down on the chair. They put the nitrous mask on my nose right away (these people were all business – no chit chat at all). It tasted a bit metallic and I swear it didn’t make me feel any different at all. I told the assistant this and she said some people it affects right away and some it takes a few minutes. As I had my glasses off (can’t see without them) and I had the mask on, I couldn’t see what was going on. The anesthetist (spelling?) was giving me a play by play of what was going on. They put a cover on my chest (I guess to keep the blood from splattering on my t-shirt!) and then she explained she was putting in the IV. My wife told me this would be the worst part but I hardly felt anything. They put in something for the swelling first, which felt cold. Then the next injection was “something to relax me”. Boy, did it ever. I had my tonsils out when I was 2, so this was a new experience for me. It felt like I was falling back through the clouds. She said I’d feel a rush to the head. I described how it felt like I was falling, and that was it. At one point someone asked me how I was doing and I gave a thumbs up sign. I heard the doc talking about something and heard a crunching sound but didn’t know where it was coming from. Next thing I knew I was sitting at the edge of the chair and they were helping me into the recovery room. My wife said I looked at my watch and said “that’s all the time it took?!!” I was out in less than an hour.

I kind of remember being put into a wheel chair but don’t remember the trip home. I do remember being propped up in bed at home and dozing of and on for the remainder of the morning.

Recovery has been pretty good – minimal pain and swelling. A bit of nausea but I think that’s from the painkillers. So a note to those who have been putting this off because they’re afraid. I was terrified. But the worst part is the anticipation. After it was done it was anti-climactic. I heartily recommend the I.V. sedation. It was an interesting expereince and now I’m sorry I didn’t get it over with years ago.

  67. Ya, I was the one who got my teeth taken out in october, I was super bummed out, but its true, the anticipation is alot worse than the actual thing.

  68. I Had My Wisdom Teeth Pulled Like A Year Ago. Numbness And A Pain That was Awful. I Threw Up 4 Times. Yuck! This Was November 25th of Last Year And I Still Remember. Did u all remember getting your wisdom teeth Pulled? Let me know.

    Jenn

    🙂

  69. I just had one wisdom tooth yanked today. all of the other 3 came in fine, no prob. But about a week ago, i had excruciating pain that was alright at first, but then couldnt be controlled with ibuprofen or tons o’ tylenol. So i went in for an ’emergency tooth extraction’ this morning. (sounds fancy huh)… i went in just KNOWING it was my wisdom tooth and not some cavity brewing. so i was more excited to get it out, and more anxious about the pain after. they gave me shots to numb it up, HELP ME MOMM!! and then cut, chopped and pulled at the tooth and it came out in 6 pieces. they let me see it also. it was also suffering from a cavity. proper intuition, but not totally. Just a note: the cavity was exposed within the chunks of tooth, and i got to take a look at it. Gross. looked like black sludge, and smelled horrible. I cant believe i had that in my mouth!!! I will think twice next time i grab a soda or chomp on some candy. I am fine now, with all the vicoden im hyped up on. so far, my cheek is numb and minimal swelling. i am maybe one of the lucky ones. who knows. But my advice is: get it done when you are young. i am 25, and this was terrible pain i had before i got this one out. good luck to all who have to get this done. its not that bad, if you think it will be, it will be. have a good attitude about it!!! :)))

  70. I just got all four of my wisdom teeth out on Monday, and at first, there wasn’t that much swelling (I actually slept for most of the day ~_~;) But later on the second day, the left side of my face totally swelled up and I can feel a huge bump on the inside of my cheek when I carefully feel around it with my tongue. I’ve been putting ice packs on it ever twenty minutes after intervals of ten, and the swelling hasn’t gone down. Is this normal? And about how long will it take to go down? ~_~

  71. hey guys its not that bad to get ur wisdom teeth out. i just got mine out yesterday 8 in the morning. Man when I went and sat in that chair i couldn’t stop shaking. They put in the iv thing and it was pretty cool. i fell straight to sleep. i don’t remember anything that happen plus i didn’t feel a thing either. I was so tired I don’t remember walking out of the building or getting in the car.

after the surgery it hurt! well not that much but it was just sooo annoying. My cheeks weren’t that swelled up but i put ice on my face anyways.

then today my face swelled up big time! it sucks but yeah i have to go a party later on tonight i doubt i’m gonna go with me looking like chipmunk. only if there was a way to make the swelling stop!

  72. collegegirl

I got all 4 of mine pulled two days ago. I’m glad they used general anesthesia, especially because the Valium I got before the procedure didn’t do much to calm me down (I was scared coming in). The IV didn’t bug me though. One minute I was talking to the surgeon about my job; the next it was over and my mom was walking me to her car to drive me home. My face was swollen that day, but an icebag helped with that and it went down. It was also annoying that I couldn’t close my mouth for a few hours after, and now it gets sore if I open it more than an inch or two, but otherwise it’s okay. The Dec. 29 surgery still killed my New Year’s Eve but oh well, I didn’t make plans anyway.

  73. Just to throw my two cents into this extremely helpful thread. I’m 19 and I got two of my wisdom teeth out yesterday (the two on the right), and it’s been just a little over 27 hrs now since then. Local anesthesia, no problems at all. Probably the worst thing about local is just that you’re completely aware of what’s going on and the drilling sounds and the smell of burning is just not fun. It was quick though, top tooth came out in 2 minutes, bottom one was impacted and required a lot more work, took about half an hour to get that one out. Gauze went in, I changed it every 20ish minutes (following the dentist’s orders) for the next 4 or 5 hrs and took two ibuprofins. Went to sleep with 2 pillows and a towel over them–I was told to keep my head elevated and that I might have bloody drool, and low and behold, there was bloody drool over my towel the next morning. Woke up once during the night to mild pain, took another ibuprofin and slept like a baby. Diet has been yogurt, pudding, milk, and water, haven’t tried eggs yet, but I had some luncheon meat just now and it was ok because I can still chew with my left side. Rinsing with salt water after meals, haven’t brushed yet. Hopefully I won’t get a dry socket, those sound terrible from what I’ve read.

  74. afraidofdentist.typepad.com where this lady gives super unusual pain tips that worked for me like calcium, etc..talks about step by step having her teeth fixed after 18 years of no dentist…It got me actually over my first dental appointment which was horrendously tough.. and great cause I was going to lose a tooth I actually had root canal on 3 years ago and never capped. Definately check it out although I usually don’t recommend stupid logs.

  75. Hey, after reading the post on the sight I don’t feel that bad about getting my two top wisdom teeth removed this friday. The top left one has cracked and I have some decay and the other one needs to be removed because it has cracked as well. I am afraid of the local anesthia because I know that I may be numb.. but I can still hear . I wonder If I can bring my headphones..lol..seriously. To be put under cost so much money since I don’t have insurance. So local it is. I have never had any surgery and I hope that this goes over fairly well, I will post after friday to let everyone know. Thanks for sharing your stories. I am not as afraid anymore as I was before

  77. Hey Everyone,

I just got finished reading every one of your posts on your experiences with getting your wisdom teeth out.. I am scared shitless. I just found out today that i need all 4 taken out. 2 of them are already grown in and the other 2 are far far under the gums. I am 23 and I am scared to get my tonils out.. a procedure that I have needed since I was 12.. how the hell am I going to get these teeth out! I am going to be knocked out but i am still scared. ahhhh!

  78. how do they cut out your wisdom teeth

what do you have to do for a week after you get them pulled

  79. Hey everyone,

I got my wisdom teeth pulled out 4 days ago and my cheeks are still really swollen… i iced a little the day of the surgery and i didn’t really ice that much the day following the surgery, but i have been icing a lot the last two days

is this swelling normal or should i be worried?

    Thanks.

I just got all four a my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. Let me tell you, laughing gas and anestesia are your friend ^__^ I was in the room for an hour before they got to me. The laughing gas made me very spacy and my whole body tingled. Then there was a poke in my arm, a few seconds, sleep, and in what seemed like minutes, I was awake. I still don’t remember how I got out to the car though. It sucked majorly last night. I tried swallowing pain killers, but since I couldn’t feel my chin or tongue, it was a bit difficult. Things are better today, but I probably talked a bit much. I’m just wondering when I’ll finally be able to brush my teeth again because right now, they feel disgusting. I used one of those Oral-B sinkless finger brusher things, but my teeth still feel gross. Ugh. At least I’m missing school, except I hate missing my college class. Well, better that I got this done now at 17 rather than later in life. All four were impacted and compacting my teeth. Good luck to anyone getting their wisdom teeth pulled ^__^ (I’m a major wimp by the way…)

  81. Im 50… in August.. tommorrow I have to have a decayed wisdom tooth pulled after a whole week of dental stuff.. two porcelain crowns and a cavity filled with a temporary filling. Tommorrwo he is putting in the permanent filling on the tooth in front of my wisdom tooth that is coming out. I am nervous, but the wisdom tooth is too decayed to fill .. he says.. I have to believe him. I have been in so much pain lately. Seems like my whole left upper mouth decayed in one year. I am not looking forward to this, both my children had there wisdom teeth out.. and suffered … he drilled mine today and put a temp in it… until the morning. My face was frozen all day today and tommorrow too. I cant wait to be back to normal in my mouth…. 50.. is anyone else 50?

  82. i’m 15 and i’m getting 2 wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow @ 5 :(. I’ll report on how it goes (as soon as i can)!

  83. Well I’m on day 4. It seemed like I’d be fine after the first day or so, then BAM, the swelling hit me. I just got back from substitute teaching, and wow did I feel ridiculous. I have a 300lb man’s face in a 185lb 20 yr olds body. I did everything right as far as icing the area and all that, I just don’t understand why the swelling isn’t going down. The worst part of it all is that I can barely chew anything. I feel like I’d be biting down on my cheeks if I tried to chew, because even the inside of my cheeks are swollen. This sucks, I don’t wish wisdom teeth extraction on anybody. The day I can eat steak again will be the best day this year.

  84. I’m getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth out this thursday. I keep hearing all these horror stories. Anyone know of any pain killer alternatives that won’t make you sick to your stomach? The last thing I want is to be sick the whole time my face is swollen and when i’m in pain.

  85. I had mny 2 left side wisdom teeth taken out a few days ago- I feel much better now, but the first few hours afterward were hell. It was soo painful. Plus I couldnt have all 4 out at the same time. apparently it took my dentist way too much drugs to numb me so he said to give me anymore would have been dangerous. Now I have to go back for the other 2 which really sucks.

  86. well.. this morning i went in and got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out.. i was worrying about it the whole week and i’m just glad it’s finally over with. Initially i was told that i would recieve concsious sedatiom.. but when i arrived the doctor told me that he was going to knock me out completely and put me to sleep. He stuck the IV in me.. i felt a rush of warmness go up my arms, up my spine, and right to the back of my head and i was out. Usually it takes 1 min or 30 secs for people, but for me it took exactly 2 seconds.. it was a very cool experience. Next thing i kno i woke up in the recovery room. Also, i’m not in so much pain as i expected i would be. it still hurts when i talk or swallow but the pain is bearable, and i just took half a painkiller. well good luck to everyone.. and it’s not as bad as you hear.

  87. I’m 18 years old, and I’ve known I would need to get my wisdom teeth out for quite some time now, but I’ve been putting it off… However, a couple days ago, one of them (that is partially in) suddenly became inflamed and painful – it hurts when I swallow, move my jaw, open my mouth too far, etc. Eating has never been so torturous. So, this has brought me to the conclusion that I need to get them out… and soon.

I think I’m definitely going to go for the local anesthesia, though — as just the thought of a needle in my arm, and being in an altered state of consciousness scares me to death. I despise needles, yet, for some reason, needles in my mouth don’t bother me at all. Isn’t that weird? I think I can deal with all the awareness, and digging of tools, and crunching — as long as there are no needles going into my arm. *shudder*

Reading everyone’s responses has made me feel a lot better about the whole ordeal. I’m especially relieved to find out that the procedure takes nowhere near as much time as I had suspected. I think I can only handle so much drilling and pulling.

  88. I just got 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed. It wasn’t that bad at all. The wait to get the surgery done was the problem. I picked the local anesthetic and gas, it didn’t take longer than 5 to 7 mins per tooth! And 3 of the 4 was complete boney impactions! Soon as one was out, he quickly stitched it up and started on another. The first shot stings alittle bit, but its nothing to dread. My surgeon was old, so he must have done this hundreds if not thousands of times. I am a bleeder and so far that has been my biggest problem, although it doesn’t me.

The surgeon’s experience, your personal mental strength, pain tolerance, age, and personal will to get it done; all plays an important role.

  89. I got three wisdom teeth removed nearly a week ago. It didn’t take 20 minutes if that long, and I paid $950. I honestly thought “rip off” once the gas left my lungs and the aid said “all done”. I only got nitrous gas and l.a shots, plus one shot in my shoulder to help retain possible swelling since all three where impacted.

I took basic tylenol because there was very little pain.

  90. I’m 33 and need to get my top two wisdom teeth taken out. I don’t have bottom ones (thank god). I am a huge wuss and haven’t had them out before now because I am terrified of needles and pain. But a few weeks ago I got a super painful bacterial infection from a “partially erupted” wisdom tooth. The dentist promised that it would come back and told me I need to get both wisdom teeth out. I’m taking a two week trip in April and hoped I could wait until I get back (thereby also holding off doomsday). But no such luck. Just a week or so after healing the bacterial infection with antibiotics (and I horrifying dental procedure), my tooth is hurting and I think the infection is coming back : (. Reading all these posts have made me feel a little better. Seems like it will be a breeze if it takes 5 minutes per tooth and sheer torture if there are any complications. I’m still pretty terrified though. If I have my teeth taken out on Wednesday will I be able to go on my trip the following Tuesday (6 days later)?

  91. The operation doesn’t hurt. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth taken out on 30th March as did my brother. He had 2 taken out. We were sedated. Since we’re not kids (I’m 35 and he’s 36)I thought it would be more painful. Just having a nice week away from work and its great for diets cos you just don’t want to eat anything. I’ve lost a couple of pounds already.

Also, we’re both Brits so we’re used to bad teeth. LOL!!

  92. ok so im getting 6 teeth pulled may 9th and im completely terrified! 4 wisdom teeth and 2 molars 3 of the wisdom teeth are impacted. im getting IV Sedation…i’ve heard from others that this is a good thing. but i’ve been reading these “horror” stories and more scared than i was before…i should really stop reading them…lol but i cant. any replies would be appreciated.

  93. Wendy Ohlwiler

I’ve always been afraid of the dentist, I remember being told to relax every 5 minutes.

I had one wisdom tooth removed at the age of 26. I had nitris and shots, and tears were rolling down my face the whole time which felt like an hour of wrenching on my jaw. I was afraid he would bust my jaw. It’s taken me 10 years to consider going back to have the other 3 taken out.

First of all how do you know if they really need to come out? I read on another site that– normally positioned wisdom teeth can be “very valuable additions to a person’s mouth” and should not be removed.

Secondly I don’t have insurance. My options are $63 for local and gas at a small town clinic. Or driving 4 hours for $700 to get general and recover at my parents house.

It all seems so horrible, I just want to put it off for another 10 years but I know that would prolong recovery and increase any risks.

I also read that–Postoperative complications increase with age, Infection, painful sockets and prolonged healing are two to seven times more frequent in patients over 20, a study of 990 patients showed. By age 25 there is a 10 percent risk of damage to facial nerves. As age increases, so does the risk of nerve damage, which may cause numbness in parts of the face, drooling or speech impairments. Five times as many older patients as younger ones in the study suffered nerve damage.

so….. if you’re sure they’re unhealthy, get them yanked before you’re 20 while you’re on your parents insurance under sedation.

  94. I wrote last on March 29th about having to have my two upper wisdom teeth removed. I had them removed yesterday with IV Sedation and local anesthesia. I was given two pills to take an hour before the procedure–one for nausea and one for nerves. : )
It was a breeze. I didn’t feel anything or wake up during the procedure. It actually only took the dentist 10 mintues to take out both teeth. I was in and out of the office in 30 minutes. I slept most of the day yesterday and experienced very little pain at all. My insurance didn’t cover the IV sedation so I had to pay $320.00 for that. It was worth it.

  95. Michelle Bogner

So I just had 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled 5 days ago and I hope I don’t ever have to have the other two done. The whole process was no big deal. I was put under which I highly recomend. It’s the dry socket that occurred two days after. I have never felt such horrible pain. The pain is so sharp and I’ve had to be on Vicatin(sp?) 24/7. Not to mention the dry socket gives you horrible breath. Ladies if your on oral contraceptives your at a higher risk of dry socket. I’ve read it can take up to 2 to 3 weeks to heal. I don’t know how much longer I can stand liquid diet. I wouldn’t wish dry socket on anyone. Imagine being stabbed in the jaw with a big knife. That’s about what it feels like.

  96. I got my 4 wisdom teeth removed 5 days ago. The actual surgery was fine. But the recovery has been tough for me. I’m 27 and was told it’s tougher the older you get. If you’re in your teens or early twenties don’t put this off and do it now.

The dentist used local and had laughing gas only. The laughing gas did relax me but like someone else on the thread mentioned I didn’t really notice. I kept trying to talk to the oral surgeon and throughout the whole thing kept having to stiffle giggles as I kept thinking of things that made me laugh. I told the oral surgeon the gas didn’t work and then started laughing. I also said Yay after each tooth that came out. 🙂

Some teeth were near a nerve and I felt a bit of the pain when they tried to get it out but each time my dentist just gave me another shot of local. The actual surgery was not bad at all.

The recovery has sucked though. I was given Vicodin and antibiotics.

The 1st night generally sucks. I suggest taking your pain meds and going to bed. Vicodin did nothing for me that night so I took it with 2 Advil. Just get through the first night and it’s all down hill.

The 2nd day was spent sleeping and watching tv still on pain meds.

By the 3rd day the vicodin was giving me headaches which were worse than the pain from the surgery so I stopped taking it.

I’m on day 5 and still a bit puffy on my right side but feeling a bit more normal and am back at work. The antibiotics they gave me are making me a bit nauseaus. My oral surgeon told me it can take up to 10 days to get full use of your jaw back and I hope once I’m off the antibiotics I’ll start feeling a little better. Still not able to eat solids though.

Good luck everyone. Don’t be afraid the procedure itself goes by quickly and is pretty painless. Just make sure to give your body plenty of time to recover.

  97. Hi folks. I just found this blog in google. And since I just got 2 of my wisdoms taken out today, I thought I would share my experience with everyone. Well, here’s a life lesson. When you’re told to get your wisdoms out before something happens, you better do what they say. I waited for years, and this past Wed. some food got under my right gum, above my wisdom tooth, and ouchie, that night I woke up at 4 am with a bleeding and swollen gum. I had my extraction scheduled for next week, but I couldn’t take the pain. My gum got pericoronitis. A very painful infection. So, today they sqeezed me in and I got my bottom 2 wisdoms taken out. Unfortunately it was too darn expensive to get all 4 out, or i would have done it. 1,300. is just over my budget. So, now I’m recovering. I’m really sore, and my chin and bottom lip are still numb. The bleeding is slowing down a little. Personally that’s the worst part. I can’t stand the taste of blood. Unless of course its a nice juicy steak. 🙂 So, moral of the story. DON”T PUT IT OFF, or you will end up like me and have to have all this done immediately.

  98. I have had pain on and off for years and saw doctors ….no one told me could be impacted wisdom teeth causing pain and hadn’t had a dental xray for many years because I thought the radiation was unnecessary. I just went to the dentist though and sprung for the xrays and have impacted wisdom teeth. I am 27 and have 2 little children and no dental insurance…..I scheduled my surgery for next week. I wish I had done this when I was young and had my parents to help. It will be rough. I have health insurance…blue cross blue shield hmo blue and am praying that will cover some of the procedure..i do not even know what it will cost though. I can handle pain…just worried about the money. Does anyone know about costs and if health insurance covers anything?

  99. I am having to get my upper right wisdom tooth extracted tomorrow and very nervous. Everyone says I won’t feel a thing but still scared. I’ve had plenty of mouth work done before but that was when i was 16 and 17 and now 29. I’m not too worried about the pain afterwards just nervous about feeling something during the procedure. Wish me luck:-)

  100. Alright, so I’m going in tomorrow morning to have all 4 non-impacted wisdom teeth extracted. I’m a 28 year old male and have been told it will take roughly 3-4 days to recover…right, thats a hangover for me…but whatever. The teeth actually all have come in straight, but decay has started in one and I don’t want to go through multiple drillings in the future. I have had everything plus more done to my mouth over the years so decided to tack on this fun little procedure. This can’t be worse than the root canal I had w/out novocaine…30 minutes of pure unadulterated terror.

What makes things worse, is that I have the pain tolerance of a 2 year old girl…and a wimpy 2 year old at that, so I have opted for the what seems to be standard nitrous gas and valium IV combo. I’m really not freaked out about the procedure, just hope the post-op pain is kept to a minimum. Anyway, just thought I would set this up so I can post later and let the rest of my fellow cowards know how it all turned out. I will be brutally honest b/c I know many surfing for info are looking for just that.

    Good times ahead….

  101. I just had an impacted wisdom toot pulled this morning. I got novacatine (guess it is a stronger version than what you would normally get). I am terrified of laughing gas and anything else. The shots are not bad, and they numb you up fine! Just don’t look at the suction the nurse has in your mouth, as it is contstantly sucking in blood! Also, keep your eyes averted from their gloves, because they are pretty much covered in blood the whole time as well. It would be nice if they offered head phones of some sort to cover up the cracking noises of the tooth being broken apart. I started some pain about 3 hours after the procedure, but the vicatin prescription works fine for that. Make sure to take your antibiotics, as not to have problems with infection. Also got a shot for swelling in the office today, and start pills for swelling tomorrow. I also had a non impacted above the gum extracted about 5 years ago. That was a piece of cake! My nervousness before that procedure was a total waste of time and energy!

  102. My follow up….

Not bad at all. Honestly, the procedure was a breeze. If you have insurance/can afford the IV valium and nitrous combo its well worth it…reminded me a bit of college actually. I was awake, and do remember, but trust me…you could care less! At one point I stopped them and asked for more valium b/c I could tell they were having difficulties with my bottom teeth, it didn’t hurt, but I was awake enough to know that I didn’t want to even feel a tug. They complied. I got even more stoned and really don’t remember too much else from that point on, except that I asked for a nitrous doggie bag as I was going under (both laughed at that one). Apparently, I was in the chair for 1 hour (felt like maybe 10 minutes), but only because they had to keep freezing me. Just be up front and tell them you are a chicken when it comes to pain…a good doctor will adapt his procedure for his patients.

Anyways, its been exactly a week since the operation and I would have to say at the worst stage (one day after surgury), I was under mild to moderate pain. the Oxicoden helped a lot and would be another recommendation of mine (if your doctor will perscribe it). I started eating solid foods 3 days ago and it takes a little longer than usual, but careful chewing avoids any uncomfortableness.

In conclusion…be brave…b/c I’m not, and everything worked out fine.

  103. I am a young 14 and am having 4 impacted angled wisdom teeth out and have a horrible fear of needles and surgury. i cant even handle shots and dont want to have the surgury but i dont have a choice. im afraid of waking up in the middle , and i dont want to b swallowing blood afterwards. any advice? do they give u the iv or the laughing gas first?

  104. I’m 14 as well, and about a year ago, I had one of my wisdom teeth out. Ally–they’ll give you the laughing gas first. If you’re afraid of needles, it’ll make it easier to handle. And it’s really unlikely you’ll wake up in the middle of the procedure, but if you do, you won’t feel anything and they’ll put you out immediately.

As for me, I’m having my other three out in two days, and I’m still worried… mostly because I had a horrible reaction to the general anesthesia last time. At the place I go to, they don’t give you a choice, but the surgeon said he’d try an IV of this anti-nausea medicine that’s supposed to help… I’m still unsure. Any words of wisdom?

  105. Hi, I am having 2 teeth removed soon, not wisdom teeth. I am over 50 yrs old and should not be afraid of oral surgery! I cannot afford the knock me out version of this, but I will be having the nitris oxcide. Is this the laughing gas you are all referring to? And with it, do you also get an IV? Or is the IV to be put out?
Can I ask for MORE Nitris if I am still too aware? I have 2 teeth upper right side that have the roots intertwined, and have to be removed.
Just wondering how the whole gas thing works!
Thanks, and good luck to the rest of you!

  106. Alright, so my story is probably the same as everyone elses in this strand, but here goes:
I’m getting my wisdom teeth out in 2 weeks. All four of them, and I’m not at all syked about it. Your stories are helpful but i still need reassurance. I am currently on birth control for my acne and I’m scared to death of those evil dry sockets. Should I stop taking it? Do you think it would help two weeks in advance? Also, I’m a baby when it comes to nausea. I freak out with just a mild tummy ache. Is it common to get sick?

  107. I’m having my 4 wisdom teeth out in August under General Anes. at the hospital. I’m quite nervous about the whole thing. Two are impacted and two have erupted. My mother said that it won’t hurt that much, but I really don’t trust her. She still has her wisdom teeth! Any good aftercare suggestions?

  108. I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow and i fear that i will get some sort of after procedure complication more than anything. If all goes well then u wont hear from me if it is bad i will write my terrifying story to scare everyone

  109. Had two upper and one lower wisdoms out a week ago today. Surgery was no problem, had general anaesthetic. Recovery, however, has been sheer hell. Face swelled up like the elephant man, and oh! the most excruciating pain, relentless, in the lower jaw. Major infection. Plus numbness and tingling in the tongue. Only today, for the first time, have I been able to come off two percocet / vicodin every four hours, and only take two in the morning, loads of advil in the day, and two at night. The swelling went down on the fourth and fifth day after beginning a massive antibiotic course instead of the standard one prescribed when I left the dentist’s office. Now, a week later, I am left with some nasty but manageable residual pain, some tingling and numbness in the tongue and lip, and a very sore jaw which won’t open properly. This sucks for me bcs I’m a singer. Hope it gets better. Plus I have ulceration around the wound sites. The swelling from the infection also made the stitches extremely painful.

Truly? The upper ones were not a big deal. But I am 32, and the removal of my impacted lower tooth has been awful, awful, awful.

  110. Last night I read through every single one of these posts…I was FREAKING scared of getting 4 wisdom teeth out today. I have never been put under before and my body reacts strangely to some drugs.
I am 26 and was told 4 years ago that they needed to come out, but it didn’t work out for me at that time. So last Monday, driving home with my boyfriend after an awesome weekend in Chicago, my upper right tooth started to hurt..I expected it to go away, because the wisdom teeth do cause some achiness sometimes, but it just kept getting worse. I haven’t really been able to eat or open my mouth very wide for days…On Thursday my mom was really worried so she called and scheduled an appointment for me, and said she’d throw it on her credit card. Good Mommy.
So….today I was really scared, after reading stories of waking up in the middle of it, etc etc.
Turns out…it was nothing. I got general, was under immediately. They were very business like. No count down or anything. The needle in my arm did not hurt at all. I guess the whole procedure took about 20 minutes. My top two were almost all the way out but my bottoms were surfaced and not really sticking up yet. Beforehand the dentist said it would be a partial bony extraction on the bottom and there would be some drilling.
I woke up in the dentist’s chair with a blankey on me and my mommy by my side. I do not remember anything. She said that when she came in I was crying and pointing at the oxygen tube in my nose, but I don’t remember why I had a problem with it.
I did cry for awhile (I guess this happens all the time, I genuinely was not upset or anything, just crying for no reason,)but I wasn’t in any pain, and I didn’t feel nauseous at all, haven’t all day in fact. The Dentist was worried ’cause I am allergic to Vicodin and Demerol makes me sick.
My mom took me home after about 15 minutes, stopped at Walgreens to get prescriptions for Darvecet, Pennicilin, and a mouth wash. I was feeling light headed but not too weird, kinda talkative actually.
We got home around 2 and my mom made me some tomato soup, which was actually quite delicious. I ate about 1/2 Cup of it in front of a mirror with a spoon. Kinda messy. My lip was numb until around 430. There was lots of bloody gauze, The gauze was really my only source of problems. It was making me hurt, and I took it out at about 4. No pain since. Just general discomfort, a little bit of blood but not much since I ditched the gauze. I haven’t gotten to take any fun drugs that put me to sleep due to my allergies, so I have been awake and fine all day. Eating sucks, I had a milkshake tonight, but it was really just a pain.
So I survived…I am so relieved, I mean it was so much better and easier than I thought it would by like 100 times. Don’t psyche yourself out…It was different, I guess but I actually feel way better than I did all week suffering through the pain the wisdom teeth caused me. Adios, los teethos malos. (OK its been years since I took spanish.:)
Hopefully I will still be this happy tomorrow.

  111. Did anyone else get their wisdom teeth pulled, but had no stitching? I’ve had three wisdom teeth pulled, but no stitching. Is that normal?

  112. Alright, today’s the big day. I have 2 hours until i gotta go. I have already stocked up on a liquid diet. I think I’m prepared. I have convinced myself that I will be fine. I’m just trying to keep calm. I have 4 wisdom teeth. The bottom two are going horizontally and the top two are going down. Hopefully it will be a quick procedure, but I’m gonna be out of it so i won’t really notice will i? I’ll let everyone know how it goes later. Wish me luck.

  113. I had my wisdom teeth 4 out of 5 removed yesterday (Friday 7/29/05). I only had novicain and was awake through out the intire procedure. I passed out during the first tooth, I’m prone to passing out. I think what got me was hearing my tooth be pull and tugged at. After the first tooth they let me have a 5 min break and then the Dentist went in for the top left one. That one came out after like 5 mins. I was fine after the five minute break and he novicained the other side of my mouth and finished the job in exacally 2 hours. I have a bunch of stiches in my mouth now. I am happy I didn’t go to sleep, I though It was an experince that I needed to be awake for. Today Im really swollen, I look like a chipmonk. The dentist prescribed two different pain killers but I only found vicoden to work… Vicoden relieves nearly all pain. Im currently starving though, Lots of pudding and tomato soup… I tried Oatmeal, but Didnt like it.

Good Luck all who are going to get them out and stay brave its not to bad.

  114. Yesterday, I too got 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted. I was so nervous going into the oral surgeon’s office, but let me tell you… getting it done is far better than you can imagine it to be. I got put under with the I.V. sedation. I thought that putting the I.V. in would be the worst part, but actually it didn’t hurt at all. The dentist told me he was going to give me something to calm me down. (i think it was because my shoulders were tense) and then he asked me if i was ready. That’s all i remember about the surgery. I do remember saying something about my spongebob band-aid and the nurses making fun of me walking so slow out to the car. I was completely numb from my chin to my tongue. I would have freaked out about this, but reading this chain helped me a lot. I was put on some nice pain killers and haven’t had any nausea (which i was worried about). I had a bunch of gauze in my mouth when i got home to stop the bleeding which was nice. Then i used some tea bags that the dentist gave me to stop the bleeding even more. I used a lot of frozen peas to ice my face. (which i highly recommend because they form to your face) and I slept a lot. This morning I woke up to a swollen face but it’s not too bad. I tried to take a shower but i got really light headed walking around, so i went back to bed. Now, I’m starting to feel the pain, but its definately bareable. My jaw just feels really tight. I have been eating all the mushy stuff, like mashed potatoes, go-gurt (its easy to squirt in your mouth), pudding, breakfast smoothies. just stuff like that. To anyone who is scared as much as i was reading this chain, It’s honestly not that bad. I’m just happy that its all downhill from here. As my dad said, “Life will go on. Its just another thing that you have to get done. and it will only be about a week of discomfort.” Just stay calm and you can definately get through this. Take it from me who cried when my mom scheduled the appointment. GOOD LUCK! i just hope i don’t get dry sockets, since i’m on “the pill”

  115. I just got my wisdom teeth out, yesterday. I guess I’m lucky, though, because I was put under general anesthesia, instead of local. I’ve been told by my mother that I’m really not the best person for sedation – Haha. (Apparently, despite the pain, I was screaming at my grandmother and boyfriend.) The doctor told my family not to ‘coddle me,’ because they needed to wake me up and I wouldn’t remember it anyway (he was right, though). So far, I haven’t experienced any nausea, though I haven’t eaten anything but two bites of banana pudding since the night before the operation. The worst pain is where the gum sites have swollen slightly, so my upper-teeth sort of scrape the lower gums and keep opening up the clot sites. Frozen peas have been useful, though (along with my pain meds). I’m usually pretty strict about oral cleanlines — I have been, ever since I went through braces — so not brushing for a week sounds like it’ll be really uncomfortable (today is the morning of just the second day, and it already tastes gross). Perhaps I’ll try some saline solution or salt water, though, as mentioned above. Good luck to others reading this chain who may be preparing to get their wisdom teeth out. The surgery itself is the easiest part, so long as you don’t let your nerves get to you beforehand. 🙂

  116. I am having my teeth out this Friday. I am having IV sedation but am worried about remembering what happens and being aware of what is going on. I don’t get any gas or anything, just straight conscious sedation. I am not a huge needle-phobe and have had teeth pulled when I was younger, but for some reason I am freaking out about knowing what is happening. Also, my brother and mom have gotten sick from the anesthetic…and I am worried that I will too. Any advice? Do you think I should get nitrous oxide before to calm me down?

  117. When i had my teeth pulled my mouth bled like crazy that day. A trick is to put a WET tea bag in your mouth in place of gauze and put pressure on ur wound by biting down on it not only do the chemicals in the tea promote blood clotting but you get the taste of rotting flesh out of your mouth and replace it with a tea taste!

  118. Had all four of my wisdoms yanked today. I was supposed to be partially sedated and conscious with general anesthesia but I think they miscalculated because I can’t remember a thing from the procedure. I’m not complaining though. I have been icing my face almost constantly since the procedure. My lower lip is still numb, but I can feel it more and more as the hours pass. I took some vicodin/ibuprofen and following that I was very nautious. This could be from a lack of food as I ate very little today. The nausea went away an hour or so after I ate some Cream Of Chicken soup (I recommend it for the broth is tasty and it has no noodles, just small chunks of chicken that can be swallowed whole). I am going to sleep now with some pillows to prop me up and I have a feeling that if I don’t take more pain killer soon I will start getting sore. Otherwise I have felt no pain so far. The worst has been the numbness of my lower lip, for I find it to be uncomfortable.

  119. OMG what are you talking about? i am 16 years of age and i got y 4 wisdom teeth removed yesterday. the doctors put me under which was pretty cool. i dont even remember going zzz… but i have the von wilibran factor so i had to get a shot of DDAVP oh yeah it feels like hot burning liquid in your arm. anyhoo i woke up with this huge ice pack wrapped around my face which was quite unattractive but guess what? I do not care for this ice pack is my best friend now, i would go out in public with this thing. when i woke up i felt pain, as todday is the second day the pain is excrutiating, i dont know what this mild discomfort is my teeth hurt so bad. it feels like my whole lower jaw has been removed and the doctors gave me tylenol 3, codeine and penicillen. but id rather have my teeth removed than a rotted painful mouth dont you agree? as for eating oh man was i hungry, the first night iwas able to eat cream of mushroom and chicken soup which helped sooth my wounds with its warmth. the chunks of food i chewed with my front teeth or swallowed. but to my dismay my parents at pizza for supper! so well i, i cut it up when no one was looking and ate some and turn it to mush them swallowed. i ate some chinese noodles and oatmeal. i am hoping today that i can eat chicken noodle soup because i find the salty soups sooth my cuts. but this is funny, when they gave me oxygen i didnt find the procedure funny i was near crying but i wanted to laugh. and when i was numbed i chewed my lip and poked and pinched my chin and nothing. no pain. but this too shall pass as they say. getting your wisdoms removed is very smart because if not removed they become infected and can cause bodily illness eek! so in about 3 weeks i hope to recover and my cheeks better not stay chipmunk because school is starting. anyone who is getting them out good luck. its not all bad the drugs help but you will feel slight pain still and gauze … ew a pain to remove so much saliva, but remember to getit done it the best. oh AND ICE ICE ICE it helps alot. 🙂

  120. I got my wisdom teeth out about a week ago. I was so nervous, specially cause i hate needles in my mouth. The novacain or however it’s spelt, killed. 10 shots in all, 1 hige needle per shot and the two that were in the roof of my mouth, i cried. I also bit the dentist but whatever. The rest of the proceedure, which took about an hour, was fine. I had my ipod on the whole time until the nurse accidently pulled it out of my ear and put the drill right next to me so i could hear it but i was spinning thanks to the laughing gas so it didn’t faze me. Afterwards i tried smiling at this really cute guy in the office but then realized, hey silly you can’t smile you can’t really move your mouth at all! The pain wasn’t that bad, i fed myself an hour after i got home unlike all my friends who were drooling and being spoon fed for a week. My only problem now is i think i tried to pull the stiches out by accident and there’s a hole in the side of my mouth now, i don’t think that’s right…

Well I am glad to hear of your successes with getting your teeth pulled, however, mine was not so good. I had to drive myself home so I could not use the gas or the general so I got 15 shots of novacaine for my 4 teeth. The surgery went OK, just kind of gross sounds and a little pain. However, while waiting in line at the pharmacy, I felt hot and thought I was going to throw up. I made my way towards the bathroom but passed out cold before I got there. Ended up with a cut on the back of my head. When I came to there were people everywhere and then after getting into a room I started throwing up and that was the worst pain ever. I could not open my jaw wide enough. Also, all my stitches ripped out and needed to be replaced. When I finally made it home I took a nap and woke up to the same feeling and I passed out again and started throwing up again. I don’t recommend going through this alone. GET HELP! Get someone to stay with you cuz it stinks to take care of yourself. My husband is a Marine and at war and my parents live far away so I was kind of stuck. Anyways, my advice, get help, and don’t drive yourself.

  122. im 16 i just had 4 wisdom teeth out two days ago. i am swollen beyond belief! the pain isnt too horrible i just wish i dont look like a fat chipmunk when school starts in 3 days!

  123. I just had my wisdom teeth out and it was the worst experience ever!!!! They did not give me anything but novicaine and it was awful…i got them out at 3:30 almost passed out after it was done, it is now 5:00 and they are starting to throb…..the worst part is hearing the roots rip out of your head while the dentist tries not to lose his grip. I have had a fair amount of regular teeth pulled and it was nothing compared to this…i have one more to go and I WILL be put to sleep…it was the worst dental experience i have ever had…and i have had braces twice, numerous teeth pulled and a device that cracks your pallet. I would not do it with just novicaine but from reading the other stuff people wrote it all depends i guess…..oh and my dentist didn’t even give me anything good for drugs….

  124. I had my wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday. I can now say that it was the worst experience of my life. Everything hurts from the anestisia to the actual removal. I’ve eaten nothing but yogurt in the past 48 hours. All i can do is sleep to avoid the pain. My cheeks are huge that I can’t even leave my house. oh and my throut hurts so bad that i can’t eat anything solid.

  125. I got my wisdom teeth pulled out 6 months ago. My chin and lip are STILL NUMB. The doctor did not put me under when I got this procedure done. I told him to stop when he was cracking my tooth because it hurt. He didn’t and he jammed another needle in my mouth and that is the side I am still numb on. When I went back a few days later he told me that this could possibly happen. He said “we went over it in our consoltation”. But….it must have been in the papers because I don’t remember hearing about it.

  126. Well, I’m 16 and got all 4 taken out today. My advice, get general anesthesia. You go in, they put nitrous oxide on for about 3 minutes, and the surgeon or nurse will stick a needle in your hand, which you hardly feel because of the nitrous oxide. By the time they do it, you could care less what they’re doing to you. Your whole body goes numb for about a minute, then your out. I dont remember anything until about halfway home. Its alot better than being awake and hearing and feeling the tugging, pulling, and snapping during the procedure. And believe me, I HATE HATE HATE being put under. I put this off and put this off cuz i didn’t want to be put under. I recommend general anesthesia definitely.

  127. Avoid this operation if you can. I am very biased because my expierence has been very negative. I went in and got an iv in my arm and a gas mask and I was out in 30 sec. I woke up about 20 minutes later balling my eyes out, pointing to a side of my mouth. Turns out that the root of my top right wisdom tooth was joined with the molar next to it. So they had to remove the molar as well. Also, my wisdom teeth were all impacted. So they had to cut my gums and remove the two bottom and the top right as well as that molar. The doctor didn’t want to extract the top left in fear that it would also be connected to the molar next to it. I’m on day 5 and I am in pain, still swolan, can open my mouth about a cm, havnt ate anything harder than mashed potatoes. Today is tue, and on Fri I am supposed to be leaving for SC to visit three of my favorite colleges that I am applying to. Also, yesterday my grandmother died. In addition, water from an ice pack leaked into my cell phone while I was sleeping and my phone is completely ruined. I am in Hell. I Want to eat so bad. All those people who said that their pain lasted 1-2 days- I hate you. No, not really but I really envy you. I am in COMPLETE HELL.

  128. Hey,

I just got all 4 wisdom teeth removed exactly only week ago. The bottom two were impacted and the top two were just pulled. I just went this morning for my check up because I am still having some pain in my lower jaw area. They refilled my Norcos (vicodin) for me so it should be alright soon he said. He also said the bottom ones would take longer to heal becasue they were impacted. I was completely knocked out and my dad said before we left I was looking for two dollars in my purse to till the doctor!! haha! I have no recolection of that whatsoever. I didn’t even remember anything until I woke up and we were getting off the exit…almost home. I just slept for most of the rest of the day and that seemed to help a lot. Just rest and be sure to take the meds cause they help.

Good luck to anyone having this procedure done…and my advise…get put to sleep for sure!

  129. just take the pain pills and everything will be fine…get this refilled if you are still in pain. It’s been a week for me and I still need meds. mine were impacted and they take the longest to heal. I have had 4 surgeries in my 23 years os life and this one was the least painfull. It just sucks cause you can’t eat.

  130. Hi, about 2 years ago i was 13 and i had my 4 wisodm teeth extracted and then i had 3 other teeth extracted, i also had a tooth growing in behind in one of my front teeth and was supposed to be three teeth over so they had to cut my palate off and put a gold chain on my tooth and then they sewed my palate back up. The surgery lasted about 15 minutes i was put asleep.
