Comment spam

Got my first case of comment spam today. The commenter purports to the have the URL “http://www.1heluva.com/cgi-bin/join.cgi?refer=23911” and comes from IP number 81.86.245.111 (which has been banned).

Don’t bother going to that URL. It froze my browser, and damn near gave me a seizure with all its blinky scrolly bits.

  1. You may want to consider obscuring the refer= number. The scam is that every time somebody clicks on the link, the dickwad (can we say that on this show?) associated with that number gets a few pennies.

As far as the host you blocked (81.86.245.111), it appears to be a British DSL line. It isn’t responding at the moment. It wouldn’t surprise me if was simply an unsecured proxy that the posting went through, rather than the source.

  2. I got one of those comments yesterday! It was in reply to a post I made a few weeks ago with a recipe for thai iced tea.. It said something like “I tried this, its really easy to drink.” and had the exact same url. Same refer number too. What was the text of the comment on yours? If its personal, its probably not a machine, just a strange person posting wierd comments wherever they possibly can to soak up hits or something.

    Strange stuff.

  3. The comment in my blog was something like “I heard that was good.” At first, I thought this was sufficiently vague to have been inserted by a ‘bot. But apparently it’s actually relevant to the post, so there must be a human being seeding these comments. Either that or a really smart ‘bot.
